How to Get a Medical Visa for India in 2026: Step-by-Step Guide for African Patients

The India e-medical visa is one of the most straightforward elements of planning medical travel to India — yet it is also the part that causes the most anxiety for first-time travellers. This guide removes the uncertainty completely, walking through every step of the process with clarity.

If you are travelling for medical treatment, you need an e-Medical Visa (eMV), not a tourist visa. Using the wrong visa category can cause problems at immigration. The e-Medical Visa is designed specifically for patients seeking medical care at Indian hospitals.

Who Qualifies for an India E-Medical Visa?

The e-Medical Visa is available to citizens of most African countries including Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Senegal, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and others. A full list of eligible nationalities is maintained at indianvisaonline.gov.in.

Citizens of Pakistan and a small number of other nationalities cannot use the e-visa system and must apply through the Indian High Commission. For virtually all African patients, the e-visa route applies.

Documents You Will Need

Prepare these before starting your application:

1. Valid passport
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended travel date. If your passport expires within 6 months of your planned travel, renew it before applying. The passport must have at least two blank pages.

2. Hospital appointment letter
This is the most critical document. It must be:

  • On official hospital letterhead
  • Signed by an authorised hospital representative
  • Include your full name (matching passport exactly)
  • State the proposed treatment or consultation
  • Include proposed appointment date(s)
  • Include hospital contact details and registration number

If you are using Arodya, we request this letter from the hospital on your behalf once your appointment is confirmed.

3. Passport-size photograph

  • Recent (taken within the last 6 months)
  • White background
  • Face clearly visible, no headwear (except for religious reasons)
  • JPEG format, 10KB-1MB file size
  • Dimensions: 2 inch x 2 inch (51mm x 51mm)

4. Scanned passport biographic page
High-quality scan or photo of the passport page with your name, photo, and personal details.

5. Proof of sufficient funds
A recent bank statement (within 3 months) showing adequate funds for your treatment and stay. Indian authorities expect to see funds equivalent to the estimated treatment cost plus travel expenses.

6. Return flight booking confirmation
Or at minimum an itinerary showing intention to return. A confirmed round-trip booking is strongest.

7. Medical records (recommended, not always required)
Recent diagnosis reports, scan images, or referral letter from your home country physician. These strengthen the application and demonstrate genuine medical purpose.

The Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1 — Go to the official portal
Visit indianvisaonline.gov.in. This is the only official Indian government portal. Beware of look-alike websites that charge additional fees — the official website is the only legitimate one.

Step 2 — Select your visa type
Choose "e-Medical Visa" from the visa category options. Do NOT select tourist visa even if you plan to spend some non-treatment time sightseeing.

Step 3 — Complete the online form
The form asks for:

  • Personal details (match your passport exactly — any discrepancy causes rejection)
  • Passport details
  • Nationality and country of birth
  • Current address
  • Contact information
  • Travel details (port of entry and exit, expected travel dates)
  • References in India (your hospital name and address)
  • Employment information
  • Previous visa history

Take care with name spelling — every character must match your passport exactly.

Step 4 — Upload documents
Upload your passport photograph and passport scan in the required format. The system will indicate file size and format requirements.

Step 5 — Pay the fee
The e-Medical Visa fee is approximately $25 USD. Payment is made by credit or debit card. Keep your payment confirmation receipt.

Step 6 — Receive your temporary application ID
You receive an Application ID immediately. Save this number.

Step 7 — Await the decision
Standard processing takes 72-96 hours. During this period, the application may be processed or you may receive a request for additional information. Check your email regularly.

Step 8 — Download your e-visa
Once approved, your e-visa is emailed as a PDF. Print it in colour. You will present this at check-in and at immigration on arrival in India.

E-Medical Attendant Visa for Companions

Patients can bring up to two accompanying persons on e-Medical Attendant Visas. The process is identical to the patient's application but:

  • Select "e-Medical Attendant Visa" as the visa type
  • Reference the patient's Application ID in the form
  • Attendants must travel with the patient (not before or after)

Having your attendant's visa ready before travel is important — do not assume you can arrange this after the patient's visa is approved.

Validity, Duration, and Extensions

  • Validity: 1 year from issue date (for most African nationalities)
  • Permitted stay: 60 days per entry
  • Extensions: Two extensions possible within India — each extension must be requested from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) at least 14 days before your current permission expires
  • Number of entries: Double entry permitted

For treatments requiring longer stays (transplants, complex cancer treatment), Arodya assists with FRRO extension requests from within India.

Common Reasons for Rejection — and How to Avoid Them

Rejection Reason How to Avoid
Name mismatch between application and passport Copy name character by character from passport
Passport validity under 6 months Renew passport before applying
Weak or missing hospital letter Use Arodya — we provide strong hospital letters
Insufficient funds documentation Provide bank statement showing adequate balance
Unclear medical purpose Include a referral letter from your doctor
Poor quality photo or scan Use a professional photo; scan passport in good lighting
Applying from a country not in eligible nationality list Apply through Indian High Commission instead

What Happens at Indian Immigration

When you land in India, present:

  1. Your printed e-visa (colour print)
  2. Your passport
  3. Your return ticket / onwards travel confirmation
  4. Hospital appointment letter (same one used for visa application)

Immigration officers may ask questions about your treatment, hospital, and expected stay. Answer clearly and honestly. Most experienced immigration officers at Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai airports are familiar with medical visa holders.

For patients arriving in wheelchairs or on stretchers (for ambulatory emergencies), Indian airports have medical reception facilities. Contact your airline in advance to arrange special assistance from the aircraft to immigration.
