LASIK Eye Surgery in India 2026: Cost, Options, and What International Patients Need to Know

Vision correction surgery is one of the most popular procedures among medical tourists visiting India, and for very good reason. India has world-class laser eye surgery centres, highly trained ophthalmologists, and technology that matches the best available anywhere in the world — at a cost that makes LASIK in India typically 60 to 75 percent cheaper than in the USA or Europe.

For African patients who have spent years wearing glasses or contact lenses, a trip to India for treatment can include vision correction alongside or independently of another medical procedure.

Understanding Your Options: LASIK, SMILE, and LASEK

Three main laser vision correction procedures are available at Indian eye centres:

Femtosecond LASIK (Bladeless LASIK)

The most widely performed vision correction surgery globally. A femtosecond laser creates a thin corneal flap, which is lifted. An excimer laser then reshapes the underlying corneal tissue to correct refractive error. The flap is replaced and heals within hours.

Suitable for: Myopia (short-sightedness) up to -10D, hyperopia (long-sightedness) up to +4D, astigmatism up to 4 to 5 dioptres.

Not suitable for: Thin corneas, keratoconus, severe dry eye disease, unstable prescription.

Recovery: Blurry vision clears within hours. Most patients achieve 6/6 (20/20) vision within 24 to 48 hours. Avoid swimming for 1 month; contact sports for 1 month.

Cost in India: USD 600 to 800 per eye.

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)

Newer than LASIK, SMILE does not create a corneal flap. Instead, the femtosecond laser creates a small disc of tissue (lenticule) inside the cornea, which the surgeon removes through a 2mm incision. No flap means no flap complications.

Advantages over LASIK: Lower dry eye incidence, no flap dislocation risk (relevant for contact sports players or military personnel), suitable for slightly thinner corneas than LASIK, less disruption to corneal biomechanics.

Suitable for: Myopia up to -10D, astigmatism up to 5D. Less effective for hyperopia.

Recovery: Slightly longer visual recovery than LASIK — clear vision by day 2 to 5. Full stabilisation by 3 months.

Cost in India: USD 700 to 900 per eye.

LASEK and PRK (Surface Ablation)

In LASEK (Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratectomy) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy), the laser is applied directly to the corneal surface rather than under a flap. The epithelium (surface cell layer) is removed and grows back over 4 to 5 days.

Best for: Thin corneas, previous LASIK patients needing enhancement, flat corneas, or patients at risk of flap-related problems (boxing, martial arts).

Recovery: Longer and more uncomfortable than LASIK — significant blurring and mild-moderate pain for 3 to 5 days, full recovery over 4 to 6 weeks. Not ideal for patients who need to return to work quickly.

Cost in India: USD 500 to 700 per eye.

Comparing LASIK Options in India

Procedure Technology Cost per Eye Recovery Best For
Standard LASIK (microkeratome) Older blade USD 400–500 24–48 hrs Budget option
Femtosecond (bladeless) LASIK Dual laser USD 600–800 24–48 hrs Most patients
SMILE Single laser USD 700–900 2–5 days Active patients, contact sports
LASEK/PRK Surface ablation USD 500–700 4–6 weeks Thin corneas

Are You Eligible for LASIK?

Eligibility assessment takes place on the day before or morning of surgery at an Indian eye centre. The evaluation includes:

Corneal topography (Pentacam/Orbscan): Maps the shape and thickness of your cornea. Essential for detecting keratoconus (a contraindication to LASIK).

Refraction and best corrected visual acuity: Confirms your prescription is stable (should not have changed more than 0.5D in 12 months).

Pupil size measurement: Large pupils in dim light can cause halos and glare post-LASIK. Modern platforms mitigate this but it remains a consideration.

Dry eye assessment: Schirmer's test and tear break-up time. Significant dry eye disease may require treatment before surgery.

Intraocular pressure: Rules out glaucoma, which can be worsened by LASIK.

General eligibility criteria:

  • Age 18+ (ideally 21+ for prescription stability)
  • Stable prescription for at least 12 months
  • Adequate corneal thickness (typically >500 microns)
  • No active ocular disease
  • Not pregnant or breastfeeding

LASIK in India vs USA, UK, Africa

Country Femtosecond LASIK (per eye)
India USD 600–800
South Africa USD 1,200–1,800
Kenya (Nairobi) USD 1,000–1,400
UK GBP 1,200–2,500
USA USD 2,000–3,500
Germany EUR 1,500–2,500

Even accounting for flights and accommodation, LASIK in India is the most cost-effective option for most African patients — particularly if combining with another medical procedure.

Which Indian Cities Offer the Best LASIK Centres?

Delhi/NCR: Very high volume of LASIK procedures. Centres include the Eye7 Hospitals, Shroff Eye Centre, and the ophthalmology departments of Apollo and Max. Good for patients combining LASIK with other procedures at Delhi hospitals.

Mumbai: Dr Agarwal's Eye Hospital, Hinduja Hospital ophthalmology, and Nanavati Hospital have strong LASIK programmes.

Bangalore: Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital is one of India's highest-volume eye centres. Narayana Nethralaya and Lotus Eye Hospital also perform large volumes.

Chennai: Sankara Nethralaya is one of the world's most respected eye hospitals and handles complex cases including post-LASIK complications from elsewhere. Dr Agarwal's chain has a strong Chennai presence.

What to Expect During and After Procedure

Day of surgery: No makeup, perfume, or eye drops (unless prescribed) on the day. Surgery takes 15 to 20 minutes for both eyes. You are awake throughout but feel no pain — only mild pressure sensation.

Immediately after: Vision is hazy. A companion must accompany you. Rest your eyes (sleep if possible) for 4 to 6 hours.

Day 1: Most patients see well enough to read and use a phone. Avoid rubbing eyes — this is the most important instruction.

Week 1: Use prescribed antibiotic and steroid drops as directed. Avoid swimming, eye makeup, and smoky environments.

Driving: Usually cleared by day 2 to 3 after LASIK. After SMILE, day 3 to 5.

Flying Home After LASIK

Flying is safe 48 to 72 hours after LASIK and SMILE. Longer-haul flights (over 8 hours) can cause dry eyes — bring preservative-free lubricating drops and use them every 1 to 2 hours during the flight. Avoid sleeping with eye mask pressure directly on your eyes.

For LASEK/PRK, wait at least 5 to 7 days before flying given the longer healing of the surface epithelium.
