How to read a surgeon's profile

Credentials matter, but not all of them matter equally. When families compare specialists, three things predict experience better than a long list of qualifications:

Volume in your exact procedure. A surgeon who performs your specific operation weekly is a different proposition from one who performs it occasionally within a broader practice. Ask about annual case numbers for the procedure, not the department.

Sub-specialty focus. Indian tertiary hospitals are large enough to support genuine sub-specialisation, so there are surgeons who do almost nothing but mitral valves, or paediatric liver transplants, or revision knee replacement.

Where the training happened. Many senior Indian specialists hold fellowships from the UK, USA, Europe or Australia, and a good number have practised abroad before returning. Medical education in India is in English, so consultations are conducted in English throughout.

Consultant, unit or hospital?

For straightforward procedures the hospital matters most, because outcomes depend heavily on nursing, infection control and intensive care. For complex surgery the unit matters most, because the surgeon, anaesthetist and intensivist work as a team. We present options at both levels so you can weigh them, and the final choice of doctor is always yours.

Getting a second opinion first

If you are unsure about a diagnosis or a proposed operation, a remote second opinion is often the cheapest useful step. Send your reports and imaging and a senior specialist will review the case, usually within one business day, at no cost and with no obligation to travel.

Where to go next

Browse programmes in the treatment directory, compare accredited options in the hospital directory, see destination options on the cities guide, or read the process on how it works.

FAQ

Common questions

How do you shortlist doctors for my case?

We match the diagnosis to specialists who treat that condition in volume, then share their sub-specialty focus, experience and hospital accreditation so you can compare.

Do you get paid to recommend particular doctors?

Our fee comes from hospitals, not from individual doctors, and it does not vary by which specialist you choose. We present options rather than a single name.

Can I speak to the doctor before I travel?

In many cases yes. Video consultations can be arranged once the specialist has reviewed your reports, subject to their availability.

Do Indian specialists speak English?

Yes. Medical education in India is conducted in English, and senior specialists routinely treat international patients.

Can I get a second opinion without committing to treatment?

Yes. A remote second opinion is free and carries no obligation. Many patients use it purely to sanity-check a plan proposed at home.

What if I want a specific surgeon I have researched myself?

Tell us the name. If they practise at a hospital we can work with, we will approach them directly and obtain an estimate.

How much experience should a surgeon have?

There is no universal threshold, but for complex surgery look for a decade or more of sub-specialty practice and regular volume in your specific procedure.

Will the doctor I choose actually perform the surgery?

That is what you should confirm in writing, and we do confirm it. Ask who leads the operation and who covers post-operative care.

What happens if the specialist is unavailable when I arrive?

Your coordinator flags scheduling risk before you book flights, and arranges an equivalent specialist for review with your agreement if plans change.

Do doctors charge separately from the hospital?

Surgeon and anaesthetist fees are normally included in the hospital's package estimate. Anything billed separately is flagged in the written estimate.

Can I change doctors after arriving?

Yes. If you are not comfortable after the first consultation, tell your coordinator and alternatives will be arranged.

Does it cost anything to receive doctor options?

No. Case review, specialist shortlists, cost estimates and coordination are free for patients. Hospitals pay our fee.
